Exploration of The Current State of The Silesian Regional Identity by Inhabitants of Český Těšín and Cieszyn

This thesis explores the current state of the Silesian regional identity in the inhabitants of the cities Český Těšín in Czechia and Cieszyn in Poland. It explores and analyses the dynamics of Silesian regional identity in the context of the official Czech and Polish national identity. It does so in relation to the territory of the historical region of Těšín. More specifically, it uses the case of the historical town of Těšín, today's Český Těšín and Cieszyn, which it examines simultaneously. The thesis thus focuses on tracing the development of Silesian regional identity and addresses the factors that may influence it. It does so by means of a questionnaire survey and subsequent evaluation of the data obtained through statistical analysis. It also deals with intergenerational differences in the perception of this identity in the context of the use of the Těšín dialect. The findings will help us uncover factors that may influence the local Silesian regional identity and thus enable us to understand it better. Overall, the thesis shows hat the identity of the inhabitants of Český Těšín/Cieszyn is very complex and is influenced by history, ethnic diction, place, and cultural ties, with the Těšín dialect and family ties playing a key role in maintaining this regional identity.
